TCAA’s Advocacy in Action: Revenue Code 068x Remains the Same

On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, the National Uniform Billing Committee (NUBC) held a meeting to discuss requests for changes and other billing issues. The Committee added Revenue Code 068x to the agenda to examine and clarify whether the requirement is the trauma team must be activated prior to the patient’s arrival or whether the requirement is notification to the hospital from pre-hospital caregivers prior to arrival. The current usage note for this revenue code states “Notification of key hospital personnel in response to triage information from pre-hospital caregivers in advance of the patient’s arrival.”

In 2001, TCAA requested a trauma team response revenue code for the trauma team activation (Revenue Code 068x) and the related notes. TCAA leadership had the opportunity to submit comments and attend the August 7th meeting. TCAA declared the note was not intended to require assembly of the full trauma team prior to the patient’s arrival. On Wednesday, August 8th the NUBC confirmed there will be no changes to Revenue Category 068x.

TCAA will continue to provide updates on the status of the revenue code as they are made available.

ASPR Statement on Nerve Agents

The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, Department of Homeland Security’s Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, and Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Emergency Medical Services issued a statement on the protocol for exposure to chemical agents. The document explains how to identify the signs and symptoms of nerve agent exposure versus symptoms resulting from opioid exposure. It also provides instruction on who to contact in the event emergency responders come in contact with an individual exposed to nerve agents and protective equipment which should be worn. It further addresses treatment options and instructs emergency responders to follow treatment protocol. Click here for the full document and a list of additional resources.

CMS Rule Requires Online Posting of Hospital Charges

On August 2nd, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized a proposal which will require hospitals to publish a list of standard charges online annually. CMS has not yet determined how they will enforce the guidelines, but compliance will be addressed in future rulemaking. Our team of lobbyists at Winning Strategies Washington provided a summary which includes background, requirements, CMS’ response to comments and the final proposal.
