February 10-11 in Chicago, representatives from over 40 national legal and medical organizations attended the inaugural Medical Summit on Firearm Injury Prevention hosted by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT). Discussion focused on caring for seriously injured patients and dealing with the effects of violence in communities. The event fostered dialogue amongst attendees to develop ideas for reducing deaths, injuries, and disabilities from firearms in the U.S. Attendees also examined how to work together to identify opportunities for firearm injury prevention, causes of firearm violence and firearm ownership safety.

TCAA and other participating organizations agreed to formally support and collaborate on a series of statements and developed public health interventions related to the issue including but not limited to firearm safety, research funding, violence intervention, health policy and mental health.

Proceedings from the Summit were released on May 20, 2019. Click here for the full text of the article.
