On Tuesday, July 12, 2016 witnesses testified before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health on H.R. 4365, Protecting Patient Access to Emergency Medications Act of 2016 and a proposed bill to facilitate the assignment of military trauma teams to civilian trauma centers to ensure military trauma readiness. Jorie Klein, Director, Trauma Program, Rees-Jones Trauma Center at Parkland led with testimony on behalf of TCAA.

In Praise of Trauma Care 

In the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, FL, Representative Burgess (R-TX) and Representative Green (D-TX), of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, published the op-ed regarding the importance of strengthening access to trauma care and legislation passed in the House and pending action in the Senate ensuring all Americans have access to trauma care. The op-ed is a direct result of TCAA’s advocacy efforts.

CMS Proposes Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System Changes to Better Support Physicians and Improve Patient Care

On July 6th, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed updated payment rates and policy changes in the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) Payment System.

Proposed Policy, Payment, and Quality Provisions Changes to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for Calendar Year (CY) 2017

On July 7, 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that updates payment policies, payment rates, and quality provisions for services furnished under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) on or after January 1, 2017. 

With regard to Medicare Telehealth Services: End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and Advanced Care Planning CMS is proposing to add several codes to the list of services eligible to be furnished via telehealth.  These include:

  • End-stage renal disease (ESRD) related services for dialysis;
  • Advance care planning services;
  • Critical care consultations furnished via telehealth using new Medicare G-codes.

TCAA representatives will attend the Committee on Trauma meeting on July 20th.  We will provide an update on NC advocacy efforts to date including a proposed resolution designating a day titled TCAA Day at the Capitol or something similar, members to contact to sponsor the resolution and funding opportunities.

SIG News

Registrar's Special Interest Group met the first week of July to discuss the Registry Operational Guidelines. This revised SIG is comprised of 22 members with diverse trauma data experience.  A team approach is being utilized to manage the workload.  Stay tuned for developments with the progress of the guidelines.


Observation Placement for Injured Patients: New Chapter for the TCAA Trauma Center Finance Resource Manual


 TCAA is pleased to  announce the addition of  the Observation Placement for Injured Patients Chapter to the TCAA Trauma Center Finance  Resource Manual.  Christine McEachin, Trauma  Program Manager for Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, completed this chapter as part of her Fellowship with TCAA.  We hope you will take advantage of the excellent work Christine has provided.  Please use this chapter to assist you in your care and monitor the potential impact observation patients may have on your program.  TCAA extends its appreciation to Christine for all of her work.  Click here to view.
