HOUSE

The House convenes this evening at 6 p.m. to consider a motion to go to conference on the GOP tax overhaul bill, which was passed by the Senate along party lines early Saturday morning. A roll call vote is expected as soon as 6:30.

Government funding takes center stage this week, as the current continuing resolution expires Friday. House appropriators on Saturday morning introduced a two-week stopgap that would keep the government open through December 22. The temporary CR includes a technical fix for CHIP that would ensure funding for the program through the end of the month. The House Rules Committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon to consider the stopgap as an emergency measure.

In addition to the government funding bill, the House this week is expected to take up the first gun rights legislation since the shootings in Texas and Las Vegas. The bill (HR 38) would permit anyone currently allowed to carry a concealed weapon in their state to do so in another state regardless of the restrictions or limitations in that state.

SENATE

Expect less fireworks this week now that the tax bill has cleared the chamber. The Senate reconvenes at 3 p.m. and is expected to resume consideration of the nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen to be secretary of the Homeland Security Department. At 5:30 p.m., the Senate will vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the nomination.
