The EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center will present a series of five EMSC Educational Webinars. The first is entitled New Guidelines for Pediatric Trauma. Speakers will include Drs. Nathan Kuppermann, Julie Leonard, and James Holmes.

The presentation will focus on:

  • Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) research highlighting EMSC evidence based practices in pediatric trauma.
  • Implications for pediatric EMS trauma, and
  • A review of the ACS-COT statement on spinal motion restriction.

Objectives: As a result of having participated in this webinar, attendees will be able to:

Describe the derivation of the PECARN abdominal injury rules

Identify the appropriate use of the PECARN abdominal injury rules in injured children

Assess the potential adverse effects of using a rigid long board and cervical collar for trauma transport

Define factors that can aid identification of children at risk for cervical spine injury whom may benefit from spinal motion restriction during trauma transport

Define best imaging practices for evaluating children for cervical spine injury

•Discuss the epidemiology of head trauma in children
